6 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 6th September [1882]. A very hot & a very busy morning. breakfast at 9 & after made arrangements for Alice to change her bedroom. Abt 10 the carpenter arrived with the flower boxes for the outside of the belvedere & I superintended the fixing of them. Then came Css Marcello’s gardener from the station with all the plants he had brought me. I spent the rest of the morning with him seeing him replant, repot, clean, arrange, make cuttings, tie up & place the plants he had brought. In the middle of it I was called away to Signor Felice who came to tell me he wd fetch my bust of Cortelazzo on 15 to be baked– Lunched at one. Did a few last touches to the flowers, had some last words with the gardener—superintended the last touches to Alice’s room & then went to my room & laid down exhausted having a headache into the bargain. At 4 Alice & Henry being gone to Murano I rang for some tea. Maurice brought it & at the same time serious complaints of Jerry’s insubordination. I had to have him up & gave him a serious lecture in the presence of Maurice. Alice & Henry returned abt 6 & brought me honey suckle of wh I made cuttings. Dinner at 7. Went to Piazzetta & left Henry & A & then returned home, read & wrote my journal—very hot & stormy feeling.
