8 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 8th September [1882]. Up at 7 & breakfasted at 7 as usual. Wrote Italian exercises. Did accounts. Pasted Despatches & did French exercises with Alice. Lunch at 1. Played duetts with Alice. Went at 3 to Armenian Convent to see Father Alischan. The gardens were lovely & they have parrots flying about them. Back by 5.30. Alice read History of Ferdinand & Isabella while I pasted. At 7 had lamps lighted & sat in belvedere to see the Queen Marguerita arrive. It is always a pretty sight to see the canal covered the many lights on the gondolas & coloured lights burnt at the different palaces as she passes up. We dined at 7.30. Went out after dinner to the Piazza. Band playing. Home at 10. Played cribbage.
