10 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 10th September [1882]. Henry & Alice went off by 9. train to Vicenza to see La Rua wh appears to be a great trophy in the midst of wh is a wheel. The fête has been revived at Vicenza the last 2 or 3 years & is to celebrate a quarrel with the Paduans of the middle ages in wh the Vicentini were victorious & carried off the chariot wheel from Padua. I remained at home. Pasted in despatches. Wrote letters. At 2 I went off to see the Queen Marghareta by appointment– I found Countess de Medina in waiting. I had known her at Naples. Marchesa Villa Marina was also there & I sat & talked to both for some time while waiting to see H.M. At last Ct Serego came out of her room & I was taken in & received very cordially & I sat with her abt half an hour during wh she chattered away in English on all kinds of things. I returned straight home & did not go out again. Css Marcello & Theresa came to call. I had tea—read, played harmonium, drew, & so passed the time till Henry & Alice returned bringing with them Mrs Burr who came from Aix les Bains to pay us a visit. The train was 1½ hour late. Henry & Alice had enjoyed themselves. The had seen the Rua from the home of Css Bonin where they had met all the Vicentin society. The Prefect of V. had also gone there to fetch them & they saw it again from the Prefettura. They had visited Cortelazzo’s villina where he has built a round tower wh is flat on one side! We dined & sat in belvedere talking till bed time.
