11 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 11th September [1882]. Sr Felice came & brought me clay & necessaries for modelling a medallion & I began a head of Henry drawing it out by the help of a photograph wh took me all the morning. Lunch at 1 & I then went back to my work and Henry took out Alice & Mrs Burr. It rained more or less all day but got a little finer abt 3. The carpenter came & took the shutters out of the upper part of my studio window wh improve the light for my work. At 5 the others returned & we had tea– Then Alice & I set to work to bring up the flowers from the court yard to the belvedere & with Jerry I cleared out the front door of all the gondola things wh the tiresome gondoliers had left about & then very hot I had to rush up & dress for dinner. Css Marcello & Theresa dined with us & Le Comte de Mas Latrie, a very talkative lively dapper little Frenchman who was very amusing & agreeable. He is a Royalist by principle—has written several books one on Cyprus wh he dedicated to Henry & his great interest seems centred in that island. Css Marcello having a bad headache left early, but he remained behind talking politics, abt Tunis wh he declares Ld Salisbury gave the French at the Berlin Congress—& he said the French were quite ready that the Italians shd take Tripoli & the Spaniards Morocco. He described how there was an oasis 3 days journey from the French possessions called                which contained 25000 splendid palm trees—but was infested by robbers who harrassed the surrounding country. M Mas Latrie said France must inevitably take & destroy it & then retire– It sounds horrible & cruel to me but I suppose women dont understand politics. The Count thereupon took leave of us begging my pardon for “avoir parlé si vivement sur la Maroc!”
