14 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 14th September [1882]. There was a great deal of wind in the night & in the morng while I was dressing there came up a burrasca & heavy rain wh almost swamped small boats & prevented the ferry boat getting across for a few minutes. After the storm it became very pleasant & fine tho’ rather cold. Mrs Burr & I spent the morng transferring the design of the “Sposalizio del Mare” on to a skin for me to paint a fan– Alice kindly arranged my cupboard for me. All went out directly after lunch to the Academia to call on Sr Batta & went to his studio. There we saw the great Carpaccio of the massacre of the Virgins & St Ursula wh he has cleaned & restored. When last we saw it it was quite black & now it is very fine & not much restored– We went on to the Ducal Palace to call on the other picture restorer Mr Fabrio, better known as Stoppabusi. He lives in the Doges appartments and has at this moment 2 fine pictures in his studio the Titian from the Salute sacristy & the large Titian from the Jesuite a wonderfully fine picture. He says it was covered with wax & had 5 or 6 holes burnt in it from letting the candles on the altar fall against it. It is a marvellous picture, restorations & all & one cd hardly tear oneself away from it. He took us to the private staircase to see the Fresco by Titian of St Christopher wh is very well preserved. Came home at 4. Henry sat to me for his medallion an hour & I went working till 6. Alice read aloud to me for an hour before dinner. It was too cold to go out in eveng. We played 4 handed cribbage.
