17 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 17th [September 1882]. All last night there was thunder, rain & wind & the same weather continued all day long. In the morng it cleared abt 10 & Beppo told us that it was high tide & that the piazza was under water– Mrs B, Alice & I dressed & went off. The tide was so high that the gondola cd only just pass under some of the bridges– When we got to the square we found that Beppo had brought us 2 hours before high tide & there was very little water in the square. We went in to St Marks & heard the end of musical high mass—saw a baby brought in a glass case to be christened. The little thing was swaddled & had a large pink bow tied over its feet. When the service was over the child was put back in the case & a woman carried the whole thing off bodily. We were going to our service in the Palazzo Contarini degli Scrigni when the storm came up afresh & a deluge of rain came down so we returned home. The men cd hardly see to row for the rain in their faces & were dripping when we got in. There was no more going out so we resigned ourselves to remain at home. I pasted despatches. Alice read to me some of Stanley’s Eastern Churches. The first thing this morng there was a commotion in the house caused by a fight between Maurice, the footman, & Jerry! There was no going out this eveng. I played the harmonium all the eveng. It rained steadily till night time.
