18 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 18th September [1882]. Rain again this morning. Mlle Bontempelli came & Alice had a lesson– I worked hard at my fan & cd not leave it. After luncheon Henry & I went off to Pension Suisse to call on Lady Galway but we met her on the way coming to us so we turned back & brought her home. She said she had been here 2 days—she had started to go to Trieste & at Piave had found the railway interrupted by the inundations & had been obliged to return. She was very amusing & talkative. She told us she had known Rawdon Brown 38 years ago & that he was then known as “il vecchio Bruno”—she said “Lord Holland carried a stick & limped because Ld Byron limped, Cheney limped because Ld Holland limped & Brown limped because Cheney limped!” Not that I remember Brown ever limping but he & Cheney were bosom friends & lived together many years at Venice. When Lady Galway left we called Alice & Mrs Burr & went to call on Brown. We found him very failing being worried by the fact that he had expected Mr Cavendish Bentinck to arrive yesterday & had had a telegram from him from Vicenza saying he cd get no further on acct of the inundations & that there were such quantities of travellers in the same plight that he cd not get a bed. We paid him a short visit & came home. Mr & Mrs C. Eastlake & Miss Griffiths called & we showed the pictures & then when they were gone returned to painting & had tea– Alice read aloud. Henry saw Mr Malcolm today who is greatly concerned at the damages done by the inundations at his place La Punta– His stables, saw mills, gardens &c being all injured. He is going off there tomorrow if he can get there. Mr Brown’s servant Toni says that such inundations have never been known since “la terra fu piantata” & that the scirocco had so banked up the waters of the Adriatic that the torrents cd not empty themselves & “[illegible word] l’acqua sono in disordine.” Henry & Alice went to the Piazza after dinner &               .
