19 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 19th September [1882]. The weather lifted a little & the sun actually shone tho’ somewhat feebly. I gardened before breakfast & was a little late getting down. Mrs Burr began a sketch from our hall window. I painted my fan. At 11 Felici came & fetched away my bust of Cortelazzo for baking & then he returned to arrange my medallion of Henry wh from not having been kept properly damp was slipping off the slate. He made it secure for me. The harmonium tuner came—looked at my har: & said he must fetch it away to arrange– After lunch Henry sat to me for an hour for the medallion. He took Alice & Mrs Burr out & returned later to fetch me & I went on with the fan in the meanwhile. We went up to station where we left Henry & Alice to walk home. Mrs Burr & I went to the man who makes casts & I got a bas relief of Donatellos wh we brought home. Lady Galway—M. Pilat & Professor & Mme Villari dined with us. I was very glad to make the acquaintance of the Professor whose Life of Savonarola I had been reading– He is very short, dark with a good head & he was very agreeable. He talked English well. His wife was Miss White—& is clever & writes in English journals & has translated his books into English. Telegram from Arthur saying he & Mildred are waiting at Milan till the line is open.
