22 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 22nd September [1882]. Italian lesson– Henry sat to me– No answer from Arthur– Went out in gondola with Henry, Mrs Burr & Alice to S. Giorgio dei Schiavoni to look at the pictures by Carpaccio. We took with us Ruskin’s little book on them & amused ourselves vastly reading it on the spot. We went on to St Maria in Bragola to see the Great Civia da Conegliano over the altar– There Henry & Alice parted with us & walked home. Mrs Burr & I came in the gondola. Read. Visit from Mr & Mrs Bracken who have come to stay in Venice a little while. Dined at 7. Henry & Alice went out in the gondola– Mrs Burr & I remained at home & I arranged photos in the big book. At 11 Alice & Mrs Burr went to bed. Henry & I played cribbage in the studio till past 1 when Sir William & Lady Gregory arrived from Vienna. They had had to walk over 3 bridges & describe the country as inundated in every direction. We gave them supper & all went off to bed.
