24 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 24th September [1882]. Mrs Burr, Alice, Lady Gregory & I all went off to church at 11. The American Consul did the service. Afterwards I left the 3 at the Academy where they were to join Henry & Sir Wm. Lunched 1.30. Just as we had done lunch came a telegram to say Arthur Guest & Mildred wd arrive at 2.30. Giovanni rushed off to the station on foot. Henry & Alice went in the gondola– The latter came back saying the train was in & they were not there, but soon Giovanni arrived & with him A & M. Henry had made a mistake abt the train wh was late. They had slept at Vicenza & got on by carriage to Padua & thence by train having waited at Milan since last Tuesday. Lady Galway came to see me—Mr Malcolm also & he described the dreadful inundations in the Cadore country. He says there is not a bridge in the country & he had to climb the mountain side & make a circumbendibus to get to his house where all is washed away excepting the actual house wh was built on a rock. Gardens, stables, saw mills, water works all devastated– Such an inundation had never been known– Sat & talked all afternoon & looked at old books Arthur had bought at Milan– Dined at 7. Henry took out Alice & Arthur in the eveng.
