26 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 26th September [1882]. Mildred had a first Italian lesson. Arthur took her & Alice to see a Greek ceremony at Greek church. I pasted in despatches. Henry took Arthur, Mildred & Alice to Murano after lunch. I planted out my mignonette & then took Mrs Burr & the Gregorys out in the gondola. Left some cards & then went to the Campo near Nianelli’s where Lady G bought a “concha” of an old Jew. We thence walked to the Piazza. Met M. de Pilat there & also Countess Salm whom I had not seen since the days I was at Madrid. She told me she was on her way to Naples to see her mother Css Sclafoni but could not get on as the Road to Bologna was now interrupted by the inundations. We walked to S. Mairé & from there came home in a gondola. Had tea all up in the studio. Mr Malcolm dined with us. Henry took Lady Gregory, Mildred & Alice out to hear the singing on the canal– We had a pleasant eveng both Arthur & Mr Malcolm being full of interesting talk about railways & shops &c &c.
