27 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 27th September [1882]. Wrote letters &c before breakfast. Abt 11 Dr Richetti came to see me & prescribed the mud of the canals made hot to put on my knee instead of the “fanghi” or hot medecinal baths wh cannot be got now on acct of the interruption of the lines. At 12 I went with Arthur across to Mr Malcolm’s to look at old books & old prints & stayed an hour returning for luncheon. Directly after lunch Henry took the Gregorys & Alice to the Correr museum. I took Arthur & Mrs Burr out in the stabilimento gondola. We went to Rietti’s to look at iron work & then to Favenza who was at home & himself showed us all his things. He has a wonderful piece of carving of the crucifixion abt 6 ft high all in wood most beautiful in design & the expression of the faces are wonderful. He bought it in a private house at Piacenza & asks £2000 for it now. We went about leaving notes &c & then Mrs Burr & I came home & Arthur went on to some more shops. Mr de Pilat came to call & brought with him Ct Ludolf the new Austrian Ambassador at Rome whom we had known at Madrid but had not seen since then. I begged him to come to tea in the evening as I had invited several people. We dined at 7.30 & Lord & Lady Alwyn Compton dined with us. In the evening we had a few friends come in to spend the evening. There was great talk abt a poor Polish lady who was drowned this afternoon while bathing at the Lido, in presence of her father & brother & her body was not even found– It was rough weather & the tide running out very strong. The inundations also continue very bad & the communications are again cut off on all sides so that no one can get away from here except by sea–
