15 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 15th [October 1882]. It poured hard & the girls could not go to church. I remained in bed. Abt 12 Dr Richetti came & gave me a lot of quinine to take. He sat & talked to me some time and we talked of books. I was reading some of Rousseau’s Emile & we talked of it & R. asked me if I had read the “confessions” & offered to send them me– Which he did in the evening & I read parts of it & the biographical notice of Rousseau– It so disgusted me of his character that it took away all pleasure in reading his writings & I put them on one side– Mme Hurtado came to see me & sat with me a little. I asked Henry to go & see Css Marcello & tell her I was laid up & he went & left word at wh she kindly came off to see me & sat with me a little. I wrote a lot of letters & Mildred came also & sat with me writing her letters– The quinine had made me very deaf & uncomfortable. In evening Henry came & sat with me & we played cribbage.
