18 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 18th [October 1882]. We had to breakfast at 8.30 to be off to the wedding by 9.30. We found the bride receiving in her bridal attire & looking very pretty. Presently the tinkling of a little bell announced the arrival of the Cardinal Patriarch & the bridal party descended to the library which had been fitted out as a chapel. The bride & b groom knelt near the altar, the witnesses in a row behind & the rest of us where we could. The ceremony was long as the Cardinal read a discourse & performed High Mass. When it was all over we returned up to the drawing rooms where refreshments were provided & the Patriarch recd his friends. We embraced & congratulated the bride & then left & returned to our homes. At the door I had a lovely white moiré bag of sweets given me with the arms of the 2 families Marcello & Agostini embroidered on it. Directly after the wedding Theresa recd a quantity of telegrams of congratulation. In afternoon we all went out. Henry & Alice walked from the Stabilimento. Mildred & I went out for a row. It was a lovely day but got cold as we came home. Olga came to tea & brought Valentine in her little English dress that I chose her. Olga told us that M. de Pilat had persuaded her that she ought to get up in the night to see the comet & we agreed to get up also & go with her to the Iron Bridge where it was said it wd be best seen– Accordingly at 3.30 Giovanni knocked at our door & we got up. Mildred dressed in 5 minutes. Alice more prudently only went to the window. The tail was just visible from our windows & when we went on the roof we found we cd see it entirely & that it was not necessary to go to the iron bridge. Beppi came to take us in the gondola & I decided to go alone to fetch Olga & bring her over to our house– At the door of her house I found Pilat & we waited a few minutes till Olga appeared & then went all over to our house & found Henry in the Belvidere from whence we cd see it perfectly. After taking a good look at it with & without a telescope we returned to our respective beds to finish out our sleep. The comet was well worth having got up to see. It was magnificent & the tail swept over a very large space.
