2 November 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 2nd November [1882]. Css Marcello’s gardener came yesterday to arrange my plants & had not finished them so he & I spent most of the morning gardening together. Then I modelled putting finishing touches to the medallion. After lunch Henry took the 2 girls to the Campo Santo to see the people going to put flowers on the graves it being “ogni Morte.” Morelli & I took a walk together. We went to St Stae where I wanted to call on Css Mocenigo– She was out. We then walked to the iron bridge near the station & went in to the Scalzi to see the Tiepolo ceiling & the so called Bellini wh Morelli says is really a               . We walked on that side of the Grand Canal & went into Palazzo Labia & went in to look at the frescoes in the ball room. Then on & Morelli drew my attention to the house of meeting of the Venetian painters where there is a little bas relief of St Luke in the wall. We were just going on to the traghetto near our house when Henry passed in the gondola with the girls & they landed at home & sent the gondola across to take us over. We found that Mr Burton had arrived to stay with us– He had written to announce himself from Verona but no letter had arrived. T. in drawing room. P. Paul Metternich called & seemed delighted to find us & resume his old 5 o’cl visits. He was just leaving us when by a coincidence the Pss arrived. She talked a great deal & made herself agreeable to us but snubbed her husband violently– She behaves very uncivilly to him in society wh is very unpleasant for those in whose houses she ill treats him– She dresses very well but I do not take to her at all—& do not get beyond an acquaintance. When they were gone we went to my room & Mildred read aloud some Wordsworth till dinner. Mr C. Tindal & Mr Stewart dined with us. Mildred played the piano.
