5 November 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 5th November [1882]. Weather dull & inclined towards fog– Mildred & Alice went to church I stayed at home & read. After lunch Mr Malcolm called & took Mr Burton & Henry to see his garden. At 4 Alice, Mildred & I went to a party at Mme Hurtado given in honour of some Americans who were staying with them a Miss Berdan & her aunt. Miss B is young lovely very pretty manners & figure. Her father is the inventor of the rifle of his name & is at Consple now helping the Turks to arm themselves. His daughter is going from here to Consple to rejoin her parents. But the star of the evening was Don Carlos whose appearance put every one in a flutter. I was introduced to him & he spoke a few words abt England & the delights of the races. Henry wd not go to meet him & pleaded his official capacity & I did not much like it but had no excuse. The man is politically such a mauvais sujet & in other ways objectionable & such a coward in the war in Spain that one cannot like him. He is of fine presence, tall, olive complexion, black hair & eyes & he wears a beard, but there is something unsatisfactory abt the look of his eyes. The room soon got full of people—all foreigners except the Mocenigo family—& it was very hot. The windows were all shut & the lights lighted even when we arrived & the heat great. We got home at 6 o’cl. Read a little till dinner. I played the harmonium in the evening. Took leave of Morelli who departs for Milan tomorrow morng.
