21 November 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 21st November [1882]. I painted my fan. Heard Mildred read German– Mildred went to play duetts at Css Hoyas. Alice read aloud to me. After lunch Henry took out Alice & Mildred. I remained at home & painted– At 4.30 I went down to the drawing room with my work & Prince Metternich came to call– He sat talking & I working & he even offered to hold my work up for me under the impression that he was helping me– In this position we were when the others came in to tea. I was arranging a border for my chimney piece of old embroidery. After tea the Prince played some of his own valses to us & tried to teach Mildred the Austrian way to play Strauss’ valses. I sent for my cast of Henry’s medallion from Felici’s. When the Prince was gone I went up & sat with Henry while he arranged his Madrid papers till dinner. I played the harmonium in the eveng & then cribbage. Mildred got a letter from her mother saying that she had made up her mind to come & fetch her home herself & wd be here on 4th Decr. I made Mildred answer that we could send her to Verona or Milan to meet her. Adeline wrote from Germany where she is on her way out here.
