23 November 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 23rd November [1882]. Painted fan. Mildred’s German– Henry took out 2 girls I remained at home to paint & practise harmonium. Half the English post came in in the afternoon & Alice received a letter from her mother saying she was coming out to fetch her & bring one of the children with her– She was to have left yesterday and will be here Saty. I made Mildred telegraph to her mother to ask if she shd return with Maria. Css Canevaro & Mlle Cozzi came to tea & we had a little music. Dined at 7 & Henry took the girls to the Opera to hear Rigoletto. I went to spend the evening with Css Canevaro & there met a M. Lazari. I was fetched home at 10.30 & was just sending off the gondola to the theatre when Maurice said they were all home. It appears that after the 1st act the baritone was taken ill & they had to come home—walked to the traghetto & so came home. I played cribbage with Henry–
