24 November 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 24th November [1882]. Mildred & Alice having colds I made them stay in bed till lunch. I practised harmonium fm 10 to 11. Painted fan. Got letters from England with full account of Sir Coutts & Lady Lindsay’s separation on acct of his having lived 12 years with a model who sat to him. There was a cold angry letter from her– It made me very sad to think of the break up of what one had considered as such a highly respectable house & one is sorry for the 2 daughters of 17 & 15. After lunch I walked out with Henry. We went to a stone cutter Darigo & then to the Stabilimento there our gondola joined us & we went to the Piazzetta landed & walked in the Piazza listening to the band. Bought some gloves– Home at 4– Wrote letters. Had tea. Olga Mocenigo dined with us. Mme Pilat came in the evening & we played piano & harmonium music. Mildred got a telegram from her mother to say she was to wait to be fetched by her.
