25 November 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 25th November [1882]. Maria & Louis Du Cane arrived by 5.15 train from England. Alice got up to receive them & we only met at breakfast. They came straight thro’ from Paris by the St Gotthard. Sat talking all morning in the studio with Maria. The girls walked out with Louis. In afternoon they walked again & I, Maria & Henry went in gondola to Piazzetta– Landed & walked in the Square & went in to St Marks church. We met Gino Marcello who accompanied us. We were attacked by 2 men who proposed to be our guides & who were so importunate & rude that Gino fetched the police & lodged a complaint. The men got away by a side door but Gino said they wd be found. We walked in the Piazza & returned home abt 4. Henry & Maria walked to the Rialto. Css Canevaro & Mlle Cozzi & G. Marcello came to tea & the former sang a little to us. Dined at 7 & Louis took the girls to the Opera. Henry, Maria & I sat over the fire talking– Played cribbage with Henry–
