29 November 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 29th November [1882]. Maria & I spent our morning on the floor of the studio arranging the cut flowers on to the yellow satin of wh I am going to make a picture. After lunch Henry took her, Louis & me to the Lido in gondola & we walked a good way along the shore picking up shells of which we found a goodly variety. We got back home just at sunset. Had tea. I practised harmonium. At 9 o’cl Mme de Pilat came & brought with her a violincellist Signor Dini whom we intend having at 10 fcs a night to come & play once a week. Css Hoyas & Olga Mocenigo also came & we had a musical evening—playing trios for Piano, harmonium & cello & a couple of duetts piano & cello. Mildred got a telegram from her mother that she was detained by a bilious attack and wd not fetch Mildred till Monday– Css Hoyas came to tea at 5 today & brought her father old Mr Whitehead the inventor of torpedos– He is an undistinguished old gentleman stout short with grey beard & very deaf.
