18 December 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 18th December [1882]. Worked at designs for fan all morning. Fine day & brilliant sun. Went out in gondola with Henry to see Signor Planchiet other house where the studio is for painting his faïence in the Corte degli Orbi behind the church Sta Maria Formosa. From there we walked to the Greek Church & we went in to see it. There are some old mosaics. All the façade of the church was under repair. It appears that it had not been originally properly built. We went also to the book binder recommended by Mrs Curtis & asked the man to come & fetch some of our books to bind. Walked on to the Piazza. The band was playing, took a few turns & then joined the gondola at the Piazzetta & went home. Had tea & practised harmonium. After dinner went to Css Canevaro’s. Found there the Brandolins, Css Mocenigo St Stae & his daughter Css Julia Persico & Col. Sarti. Andriana came later– They were all on the qui vive. Pss Metternich had invited them for Wedy evening to hear Liszt play– They had announced they were engaged to come to me. It was conjectured the Pss would write & ask me to change my day as she cd not put off Liszt. I said if she did I should of course do as she desired—it seemed to me it was much ado abt nothing. Ersilia Canevaro sang & I also a little Spanish– We came home at 11.30.
