19 December 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 19th December [1882]. Prepared books to send to the binder. Ersilia came to fetch me abt 9.30 & we went shopping together. We went across to the Traghetto in front of our house & walked to the Piazza to buy some little Christmas presents. At San Moisé we found Ersilia’s gondola wh took us home. Guggenheim came to see Henry & carried off my design for the fan to get me some ornaments made. Cortelazzo came & brought designs & models of the little clock he is making for my brother Arthur. He returned to Vicenza in the afternoon. As Ersilia & I were walking in the Piazza we met Trombini & he told E. that Pss Metternich was determined not to ask me to change my night and so we would invite people from 8 to 9 & then they cd come on to me. This is because she would have had to ask me to go to her house & she was determined not to do it. It seemed to me so silly that on getting home I wrote to put off our music till Thursday in order not to make such a fuss before the world & the music masters. It being a lovely day Henry & I went to the Lido & took a walk on the shore. A strong N.E. wind was blowing & it was nice & fresh. We met Mss Tindal & Stewart & walked some way with them. Home by 5. Had t. Mme Canevaro & Brandolin came & sat talking some time. After they went I practised harmonium. Read letters of “Galiani.” Cribbage.
