20 December 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 20th [December 1882]. Read & wrote letters. Got one from Alice & Maria announcing their safe return home. After lunch went out with Henry in gondola to the Rialto. Walked from there to Podios & to the square to buy some Christmas presents & joined the boat again at Piazzetta. Went to Stabilimento & on to call on Olga Mocenigo. Found a good many people there & did not stay long. Home—tea & practise harmonium. Got a note from Mme Pilat saying Frontali cant come tomorrow– So directly after dinner I went off to see Css Canevaro & asked her as she was going to the Metternichs & wd see all the musicians to try & arrange for them to come Friday instead of tomorrow. I had to wait some time as she was dressing. I then went home & called for Henry & we went off to Murano to see the common glass works by night wh is a very pretty sight as the work is done by the light of the furnaces & the glass is all red hot which shows by night & in the day it does not. We got home again by 10—& read till bed time. It was a splendid moonlit night & not very cold. The weather really seems settled at last—we have had now 3 fine days.
