31 December 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 31st December [1882]. Read all the morng my prayers & some of Dean Stanley. It was a thick fog & I could not go to church & did not either of us go out—so I arranged the books in Henry’s room in the afternoon. Mr Malcolm paid us a long visit & also Mr Horatio Brown. At 5 Css Brandolin, Mlle Cozzi, Mrs Nobile & Css. G. Persico all came to tea. We dined at 7.30 & at 9.30 we went to spend the eveng at Css Marcello’s & there we stayed & supped to see the New Year in. Ct Canevaro took me to supper & I sat between him & Ct Brandolin. The Metternichs, Canevaros, Brandolins, G. Persicos & Ct Luigi Michiel. When it was 12 every body drank every body else’s health & there was a general movement & a great noise & much laughing. There were 3 tables & at the one was Pss Metternich, Ct Mocenigo, Ct Luigi, Andriana & P. Czetwertynski. At the table I was at the Canevaros & Brandolins & Henry had Css Valmarana. Abt 1½ we wished each other once more a Happy New Year & all went to out homes.
