3 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 3rd January [1883]. Css Brandolin came at 10.30 & we read together Tennysons Guinivere which affected us both very much. I never can read it with a dry eye. I was very much ashamed of myself. After lunch Henry & I went off to Acquati foundry to see the wax model of my portrait of Henry wh we are going to have done in bronze– They showed it us & arranged to send it me tomorrow to put the finishing touches to it. We went on to St Marks as we heard that was to be a musical service, as it had not begun we walked a little while in the Piazza & then went back to the church & I got a chair in a side chapel & listened to the music. It was almost the same as what we heard last time & after it the Patriarch came & the Host wh had been exposed the last 3 days was taken down from over the altar & given to the Patriarch. Then there was a procession round the church out into the porch & in the other side & then up the middle. It was very picturesque as it was very dark & there were a great many candles, crosses, banners &c & a gold canopy carried over the Cardinal who was carrying the host. Henry & I went away before it was quite over & got home at 5. Had tea—played harmonium– Mr Malcolm & Idita Hurtado came to dinner & Idita & I played duetts on piano & harmonium afterwards. Mr Malcolm left early.
