8 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 8th [January 1883]. Css Brandolin came to read & we had scarcely settled down to our Tennysons when the door opened & in walked Ersilia & her little boy. She kindly brought me some patterns. In a few minutes more enters Andriana Marcello so we had to give up all further thoughts of reading. There was a great discussion on D. Carlos & the way he was to be treated here. I maintained that he shd not be frequented by the Ladies of the Queen—& Andriana said she had permission from the Queen & had already asked for an audience of the Dss de Madrid—they went all away at last but it was near lunch time. Directly after lunch I went with Henry in gondola to Murano. We expected to find Bn Franchetti there but finding he was unable to come on acct of the gout Henry hurried back to the Stabto to meet him & I came home & worked a little on the wax model. Had tea, wrote letters. In eveng Henry went to Css Valmarana’s to play whist. I remained at home—read &c.
