10 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 10th January ’1883. Aquati fetched away the wax model. The little deformed embroideress came & we set to work to appliqué the flowers on the yellow curtain. I also worked hard at drawing out carefully the design on my fan– After lunch Andriana Marcello came to fetch me in gondola & we went to call on Pss Hohenlohe at Ca’ Dario. Found her with her 2 daughters. She is quite an old lady of the old type with a flaxen curled wig, a good figure & amiable & polite. I had not been into the Ca Dario since we went over it when we thought of buying it. It has been beautifully done up by Mrs Ker—but the staircase is horrible dark & narrow. From there Andriana went to leave cards on the Dss of Madrid’s Lady. Just as we got to the door D. Carlos & his family were getting into their gondola. Andriana’s gondolier with out any ceremony stepped into their gondola to cross it & deliver the card—a cool proceeding wh horrified us & sent us into fits of laughter. We went to walk on the Piazza where we met D. Carlos, his little daughter & his big dog. Doña Bianca is an ugly child of 12– He stopped us & made a few observations. We went to the gondola at S. Moise. It was very cold & sleeting. She dropped me at home. T & practised harmonium. Wrote letters. Idita Hurtado & Malcolm dined with us. Canevaros, Brandolins, Marquesa d’Adda, Trombini, P. Metternich, Andriana, Gino & Nicola came. Frontali & Dini both came so late that we only got our trio after 11—& kept up rather late–
