11 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 11th January [1883]. A cold dull day. Css Brandolin came to read Tennyson from 10 till 11.15. Afterwards Idita came to help to put up flowers & arrange the room but we did not do much as we found Mr Malcolm’s gardener doing the flowers. I returned to my fan– Did not go out, painted, read & worked. Had tea in the studio. Dined at 7.30 in library as usual. Dressed before dinner. Went down at 9 & had candles lighted, abt 10 people began to arrive but the night being cold, stormy & snowy comparatively few people came & it was a very dull party & was over pretty early.
