12 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 12th January [1883]. Breakfast in bed & then got up– Began to paint my fan that is put the colour in. Painted all day it being too wet to go out. Henry went out alone– Had tea downstairs & then practised harmonium & piano till dinner. Wrote to Sir A. Otway to tell him we are leaving here on 27th. After dinner went to the Canevaros. Met there Css Brandolin, Marchese d’Adda, Css Persico, Andriana, Gino & Nicola & also O. & Pss Hohenlohe Ypsilante. She is young, tall & rather good looking—a greek by birth, he is a tall dark rather stout man & has a voice & sang incessantly all the eveng to our great perturbation as he sang continuously out of tune. I played some accpts at first for him & Ersilia to sing duetts but I acquitted myself so badly that I was relieved when Trombini came in & did it. I gave him 2 trios of Rubinsteins to try over & play next Wedy here wh I received by post from Paris. Henry played whist. We came home after 12.
