14 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 14th [January 1883]. There being no longer any English service sat at home & read a good deal. It rained hard all day but at 3 o’cl Henry & I went to Mme Hurtado’s where we found all the town assembled to see the two little plays acted which were given before at Mrs Bronson—La Marquise de Croc & the piece by Miss Bronson. The dining room had been turned into a state & there were seats for all the ladies. D. Carlos was there. At 5.30 it was over & I went to call on Mme d’Adda when I got upstairs I found that Mme d’Adda did not receive & was waiting for my gondola to come back when Ct Brandolin came out & took me into his smoking room. Just as I was going away Mme d’Adda came down & then Css Brandolin, Mme Canevaro & Mlle Cozzi. There were all open mouthed on the question of Css Marcello & D. Carlos. She had consulted them as to whether she shd ask him to her party tonight & they were indignant at the idea & all screamed at once so one cd understand nobody. It was pouring when I went home. In the evening we went to Css Marcello’s where there was a brilliant party & they ended by dancing. After all D. Carlos was not there. We came home early as Henry had a face ache.
