17 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 17th January [1883]. Painted fan. It was fine & sunshiny too for the first time for weeks & we were much delighted. Went out after luncheon & took a walk on the Piazza– I went to call on Mrs Bronson to say we accepted her invitation for tomorrow eveng to see tableaux vivants. In the course of conversation she mentioned that D. Carlos would be there so I told her frankly we preferred not to meet him & so she asked us Saty instead wh I accepted– Called for Henry at the Stabto & home. Ct & Css Canevaro came to tea– He went on to Andriana’s & left Ersilia with me—& we chatted till past 6 when she went. I practised till dinner. After dinner played cribbage with Henry & to our astonisht Sr Frontali turned up. They had not told him our music was put off. Dressed & went to Css Albrizzi’s ball– There were a great many people there. We had never seen the house before. The ceilings are all covered with stucco’s large pattern & ladies all hangg about & holding up curtains wh they had better have made use of for garments. It is in a bad late style; but is thought a great deal of & the late Ct has actually bequeathed the home to the town after his wife’s death altho’ they have 2 girls. Henry played whist– We came home abt 1–
