19 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 19th January [1883]. Ninina came to read in the morng but she had such a bad headache that she could do nothing & went back early & I went on with my fan till nearly lunch when Mr Bonar an ex diplomat came to call & I had to go down. He is a wearisome pompous pretentious old fellow very much taken up with himself & proud of being well with all the great Austrian families. He had been Ch: d’Affs at Vienna & 1st secy. He sat with us while we lunched & left directly after. Beppi went to the station to fetch my blue velvet dress wh Mme DuCroquet had done up & sent back to me so Henry & I went across to the traghetto & walked to the Piazza. We met Mr Bonar & he walked a part of the way with us. We walked to the book binder’s near the Greek church to ask when he was going to send home our books. We went round by the Riva degli Schiavoni where there are booths put up giants dwarfs shows &c for the Carnival & crowds of people– We then went home. Countess Thun called & also M. & Mlle Texeira– I practised harmonium. After dinner we went to Ersilia’s where there were a good many people & she sang some songs of Conte Contin’s. He accompanied her on the piano.
