21 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 21st January [1883]. There was a thick fog all day wh was a great disappointment as there was to be a procession of masks up the canal. I painted all the morning at my fan– At 3 thro’ the mist wh lifted a little we saw 7 vaporetti go up the canal laden with masqueraders. As soon as they were gone by we got into our gondola & went to S. Moisé & thence walked to the Royal palace where we found all our friends assembled to see the procession of masks wh was supposed to arrive from the station to open the Carnival. It was bitterly cold & very damp & foggy– It was amusing to watch the crowd. The procession opened with men on horseback a great curiosity to the people some of whom never having been on the main land must never have seen a horse– The procession with its band moved slowly from the piazzetta to the Piazza– The crowd prevented its going fast & by the time it had got on to the dancing estrade in the Piazza the fog had returned & it was colder than ever so that we were glad to get home. Andriana Marcello who was not well had to go home to bed– After dinner we went to the Brandolins & Henry played écarté. M. & Mme & Mlle Rombo were there. Mme Canevaro & Mlle Cozzi had come to tea with me at 5 & then they had arranged to get some friends to go masked to Css Brandolins in the evening so as we were sitting at the Brandolins in walked 2 men & 2 women masked wh turned out to be Mlle Cozzi, Ct & Css Schio & Gino Marcello. It made some fun & talk & after they were all found out we gave them tea & they remained the rest of the evening.
