27 January 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 27th [January 1883]. Got up at 7 & left by 9.15 train for Milan. Mr Castellani & Gino Marcello were at the station to see us off. It was cold but fine. We lunched at Verona—got to Milan 3.40. Marquis D’adda met us with his carriage & took me to his house. Henry & Hill went to the Hotel Cavour to settle the rooms. I sat with Mme d’Adda & she had a certain Ermelinda there to consult with me about fastening the embroidered flowers on the curtain wh she arranged to do for me for 150 fcs. Had tea with Mme D’adda. She had several visitors, a Mme Mellini, another young lady a great friend of Ninina’s whose name I did not hear, & the Marchesa Trotti with two daughters– Henry came at 6.30– Hill brought me my dress for the evening & I changed in Mme d’Adda’s room. Her son & daughter in law who live with them & are quite young & lately married made up the party at dinner. After dinner Marchese D’adda took Henry & me to the Scala theatre & the son came too. We saw the Opera of la Juive of Halevy beautifully put on the stage & well sung—the Prima donna Mlle Bruchi—a tenor from Padua & a french bass– After the Opera the Marchese took us behind the scenes & presented to us some of the prettiest ballerinas. It was a curious sight & certainly everything looked very curious so near & very different to when one saw it from the theatre. We only stayed a few minutes after the ballet had begun & went back to our hotel. Mr Alberto Falco paid us a visit in the box. We had not seen him since we saw him at Madrid. He told us of M. Nicolas recent death there—wh we much regretted.
