Monday. 29th [January 1883]. Arrived at Paris at 6.40 & went to Hotel St Romain. Had some tea & went to bed till 11 when I got up & had some soup. Henry went to the Embassy & did not get home till 12.30. Mr & Mrs Childers came to see us as they are stopping at the same hotel. Mr Belards’s hotel is becoming very grand now with a Chancellor of the Exchequer, Ambassadors &c &c Henry lunched at 1 & then he & I walked to Mme DuCroquets ordered my dresses & then took a cab & did some more commissions & returned abt 4. I had some tea & wrote & read. Mr Barrington & Col. Villiers from the Embassy called. Henry says that the English & French papers have the news that he is to be sent Ambassador to Rome. We dined at home & went to bed early after playing cribbage.
