3 February 1883 — Paris | |
Saturday. 3rd February [1883]. M. Dreyfus came at 10 & took Henry off to see Baron Alfonse de Rothschild’s collection. I did not go out in the morning. Henry returned to lunch at 1 & afterwards we walked out together. We went to the Louvre to look at the Ancient Sculpture but we could not see it much as it was a good deal of it closed for repairs. We went to the Palais Royale & sauntered round & then went home. Dined & at 8.15 went off to the Eden Theatre to see the Ballet of Excelsior which is put on the stage by a man from Milan with 200 girls of the school of dancing. The theatre was very large & very fine. We had places in the stalls– Up above the back of the theatre was occupied with numerous saloons with drinking bars at wh there were women in fancy costumes. As soon as the outrácte began trumpet music, Hungarian bands &c strike up to attract people. Henry went up once & said there was a great crowd & it was not quite the place for a lady. We walked home after the ballet & as we came by the Opera house met masks going to the Bal masqué. There was a great crowd looking on & the Place de l’Opera was lighted by electricity. | |
