7 February 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 7th February [1883]. Ash Wednesday. It was raining hard when we got up but it cleared in time for me to walk to church. I went to St Georges Han: Sqr. Mr Hambro arrived to sleep here last night & I saw him at his breakfast & asked him to dine tonight. Henry had the carriage & went to the city to lunch. I lunched at home alone. Henry returned at 3. Sir Henry Thompson called & also Sir Arthur Otway & my brother Arthur– Henry took Sir Arthur upstairs to talk business & Arthur & I remained chatting downstairs till Mrs & Miss Childers called when he went away. At 4 Henry took me in a hansom to call on Lord & Lady Hammond. We found them at home & Henry went in to Ld H’s room while I went up to Lady H. At 5 we came home & had tea. Squire Burr called & we had a few games of cribbage. Mr Hambro & Arthur dined with us. We tried to make coffee with the new coffee machine we had bought at Paris & it was not very successful– When Mr H. & Arthur left we played cribbage.
