8 February 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 8th [February 1883]. Wrote letters—read—it was dark & foggy in morning. Mrs Burr came to see me. Alice & Maria turned up at luncheon & Alice remained to lunch M. going on to Langham House– Sir George Bowen called. He goes tomorrow as Gov. of Hong Kong. At 3.15 went to 9 S. Audley St to see Mrs Rate, she was gone out so I sat with May Ponsonby the while till she returned. We had not met since poor Francie’s death. We had not much time for talk as she had to return by train to Milton. Blanche also came to see her– I went on to Mrs Childers as it was her day. Met there a Capt. & Mrs Thayter. He had been too old to pass his exam for the army & had enlisted as a common soldier–& risen fm the ranks. Mrs Childers said he had written a very good book on the subject. He is married & his wife seemed nice. He is quite young—dark, pale & thin with rather a nervous manner. Got home 5.30. Henry & I dined alone. Cribbage.
