9 February 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 9th February [1883]. Sir Wm Gregory came for Henry & took him to the Royal A. to see the exhibition of Rossetti’s pictures. Mrs Austin (Temmy) came to spend the morning with me. Lady Gregory came for a few minutes & then went to join Henry & Sir Wm at the R.A. I began to cut out the new chintz cover of the big armchair in the drawing room. Henry returned to lunch with Temmy & me. At 3 Henry & I went out in the brougham to 30 St James’ St to choose some venetian flower glasses & I left him there & went to Blanche’s. She was out. Left some cards & paid a visit at the Duff Gordons. Miss Alice was at home & I sat a little while with her– Went on to see Mrs Willie Hanson at 103 Ebury St & took her with me to the stores to buy myself some plants then back to Ebury St & had tea with her. Home at 5.30. Henry came in later– We dined with Sir Wm & Lady Gregory. Met Lord & Lady Enfield, Mr Chenery, Mrs & Miss Higgins, Mr Hamilton Aidé. Mr Chenery took me to dinner & I sat by Sir Wm. Mr Chenery was not very entertaining. After dinner I had a long talk with Ld Enfield. He began by asking me if it were true that Henry was going to Rome. I answered by asking if he thought Sir Aug. Paget was going to leave—as I did not– He said Sir Aug. is my cousin & my great friend & I do more than think I know it. Then Lord Enfield went on to say how much he regretted the line Sir Aug: had taken up when last there was an attempt to move him & he had been offered St Petersburg. He said he had seen all Sir Aug: correspondence on the subject & he was sure he had committed blunders– He abused Lady P. & said he could not bear her & that she had done her husband a great deal of harm & that if Sir Aug: had not been worried into it he would never have behaved as he did towards Henry. He said he was too much of a gentleman. I said how much Henry had felt Sir Aug:’s conduct after they had been so long friends– Lord Enfield begged to be allowed to say that to his cousin shd they ever speak on the subject. He ended by saying that he sincerely hoped Sir Aug: wd get a good post & that Henry might go to Rome. This is the first real confirmed intimation of Sir Aug: leaving Rome & I begin to think it possible Henry may go there. Lady Gregory took me up to the nursery to see the baby in bed & I promised the nurse Henry shd send him a rocking horse.
