10 February 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 10th February [1883]. We ordered the carriage directly after breakfast & went to Blanche’s. Found them at breakfast. Sat with them a little while, talked politics to Edward or rather made him talk. His idea is that Lord Enfield having been got out of the Govt will have a mission offered him—& Goschen an Embassy– I walked home with Edward at 11.30. Henry went out to see Sir Wm Drake & returned to lunch at 1. Alice Du Cane & Isabel came in for a moment on their way to Blanche’s to rehearse the French play they are to act there on Tuesday. At 3.30 Henry & I drove to the Victoria Sta. & went by 4.5 train to Dorking to stay with the Rates. The carriage met us. We found them all at home—but of course all looking very sad as it is only 4 months since Francie Rate died. We dined at 8 & in the eveng Henry & Mr Rate played billiards & the whole eveng Alice talked to me abt the poor child’s death & I sat with her while she undressed & still she talked of her.
