17 February 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 17th February [1883]. Wrote letters & read &c. Mrs Burr called in the morning & sat a long time chatting. Directly after lunch Henry & I drove down to Roehampton to stay with the Du Canes. Found all the children in a state of excitement preparing for the French play they were going to act at 5. Helped them to dress & assisted at the hairdresser’s “doing” of Daisy’s hair. A good many people were invited & a stage arranged in the drawing room. Blanche was down with her children & she opened the proceedings by making Irene & Olwen sing their French songs of the other day. Then Daisy, Ruth & the twin Du Canes gave a little piece called “La Chèvre et le Loup” & they did it charmingly. This was followed by a piece of Emile Souvestre’s called “La vieille cousine” in wh Ola, Daisy, Nela & then Corrie May Dora Du Cane, also Mildred Guest acted. I sat near Lady Leven & told her I could not forget that in that very same room some 25 years since I & my brothers & sisters had all acted plays—when we were children. The piece was over at abt 6.30. Alice was stage manager. When it was over to amuse the children my brother Arthur, Edward Ponsonby & I did some Dumb Crambo charades & also made them dance until we had to go to dinner for wh Blanche & Edward remained. After dinner we went again back to the children in the drawing room & played games with them till 11 when we all were glad to go to bed.
