4 March 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 4th March [1883]. Breakfast at 9 & at 10 went off to 3 St Georges Place to go to church with the Gregorys. Sat with them while they breakfasted & then we went in a cab to Victoria Station. While at Gregorys we saw 4 black elephants & 3 camels drinking at the fountain opposite. They were being driven by a man on horseback. All the cab horses seemed terrified. We went by underground rail to the city to St Helens church—a curious very old church which had formerly been attached to a nunnery & was in fact a double church. The service was very well done. The singing excellent—there were abt 40 people & the quiet made me feel as in a country church. During the communion service we waited in the nun’s aisle & then after this was over we got Dr Box to show us round the church wh he very kindly did explaining it all to us. It was curious to see the nuns door of entry & the window of the abbesse’s room from wh she cd see the high altar. The Nunnery so ruined was pulled down at end of last century & built over. Came back by train to Charing X & I left the Gregorys & took a cab to go to lunch with Blanche where Henry met me. Monty was also there. After lunch we went in the brougham to call on Sir Robert & Lady Collier who live on the Chelsea Embankment. They showed us the two studios Sir Roberts & his son’s—thence to Watts’ but he was out—on to Leightons. He was in & there also was Watts & Leighton’s friend & Architect Mr Aitchison who showed us the various beauties of the house wh is quite a gem of beautiful things. We got home abt 6 & I was pretty tired. Mr Cartwright called & sat some time with us. Dined alone– Cribbage.
