8 March 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 8th March [1883]. Henry having heard yesterday that Ld Granville wd see him tho’ he preferred not to discuss abt Rome—he went to see him in the morng & had nothing satisfactory from his visit. I worked machine making a sofa cover & had a long talk with Edward Ponsonby abt Henry’s prospect as he came to me with a note from Blanche. He seemed to think that our chance of Rome was up & of course I could not tell him that I knew it was– Of course he justified the party view of the question & did not seem to see Henry was being illtreated. After lunch I took Henry in the carriage to the Nat: Gallery– There was a great deal of snow on the ground & as it was freezing it was very slippery & the horses had to be roughed– I left Henry & went to see Blanche & on to Mama & she was radiant at having an order for 400 doz. Turkish d’oyleys from Lewis & Allenby. I took Blanche with me to Charles St & left her & then went home. Mr Burton called to see Henry abt getting a picture for the gallery from the Antinare family at Florence. Dined at 7. Blanche dined with us. Connie & Alice also but owing to the slippery road they arrived late & Charlie Eliot arrived just as we had all finished dinner. Henry & the others went on to the Bach Concert. I waited for Charlie & then we joined them. Heard Max Bruch’s . It was very fine & was well given. Henry & I walked home by 11. Played cribbage. Henry found a letter from Gladstone in answer to a note asking to see him, saying he had no resentment against him wh should prevent his getting an appointment but as he had nothing to offer him he thought Henry wd not come to see him—the meanness of both Gladstone & Granville trying to avoid seeing their victim how truly despicable it is! We played a few games of cribbage & then went to bed.
