9 March 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 9th March [1883]. Our 14th wedding day. I was much broken down with the worry of all that is going on & could not keep from crying at breakfast wh I would have given my eyes not to have done. I copied a letter from Henry to Gladstone. Mr Elevin came by appointment to lunch with us. He was kind & charming as ever—& when Henry told him that his diplomatic career was at an end he urged him to begin some other work. Alice Du Cane came in to lunch & I sent her out walking with Hill in afternoon– Henry went out & I waited to see Addie Tavistock who promised to come directly after lunch but came rather late. We had a nice little talk & when she was gone I went off to see Mrs Vaughan as I had promised. I found her alone & was sorry when we were interrupted by the entrance of Mrs C. Buston & her daughters & so I left & got home just at 5. We dined at Mrs Jeunes in Wimpole Street at a sort of artistic dinner. Met Mr & Mrs Burr, Miss Kate Greenaway, Miss Davenport Bromley, Mrs Poynter, Lady Lindsay of Balcarres, Mr Whistler, Mr Burton, Sir Henry & Miss Thompson. Sir Henry took me to dinner & I sat next to our host. The table was all arranged with yellow tulips in honor of Mr Whistler, an arrangement in white & yellow. Pleasant evening.
