15 March 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 15th March [1883]. Very busy day with one thing & another– Arthur called, Blanche came & brought Onie to spend the morning with me & to wash my plants. Miss Boyd came to lunch. Onie stayed with Hill & I went out altho’ it was cold & snowy to shop & took May Boyd with me. I went to call on Henry’s Aunt Mrs Austen who’s younger sister has just died & found that she seemed to realize her loss & was low—tho’ the servants said she did not remember it for long together. I went to see my mother who has a bad cold & then went home. Found Alice there & sent her & Onie to Queen Anne St. Put up the flowers for the dinner table & had just time left to dress. Mr & Mrs Lecky, Mrs Kay, Mrs & Dr Wm Smith, Mr Fergusson, Lord Aberdare & his daughter Sarah, Mr Cartwright dined with us. In the evening we went to Sir Wm Drake’s a musical party where a debutante screeched her part out & another played very indifferently on the violin—a sort of school girl performance. Found very few people I knew there, sat some time by Mrs Burr & discovered Mrs T. Bruce. I was talking to her when Mrs Burr who was ready cloaked & just leaving slid up to me & said “they have blown up the Home Office.” Mrs Bruce became alarmed & said “Let’s get home.” I seized her by the arm, made her sit down & said that it was probably not true– We soon after all went home.
