16 March 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 16th March [1883]. It turned out to be true that the Irish had tried to blow up the Home Office & had destroyed one large window & a great deal of glass in all the neighbourhood but happily without loss of life. Lady Eastlake, Mrs Bagot, Mr John Murray & his daughter Annie, Mrs Holmes White & her daughter came to call– Sir Arthur Otway also came at the same time to bid us good bye & to lament the ending of all our hopes of Rome– We dined with Mrs Drummond at 18 Hyde Pk Gardens– Browning the Poet took me to dinner & I sat between him & the Poet Morris the Author of Epic of Hades– Both were pleasant—but I fancied the latter was rather self sufficient, a little snobbish & striving after grandees &c. Met Mr Fergusson, Miss Browning &c at dinner. In even went on to the Poynters’ at 28 Albert Gate– Met there Joachim with whom I made acquaintance but who unfortunately did not play as he was tired. I was struck by his fine head. He speaks English with very little accent & has pleasant unaffected manners. Met Lady (Hamilton) Gordon (née Herschel) who tells me she had a young daughter living out at Venice, she is very delicate & is there with an old nurse. I remember hearing Mr Rawdon Brown speak of a Miss Gordon come from Egypt to Venice.
