9 April 1883 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Monday. 9th April [1883]. Left Roehampton by a 11 train & walked down to the station with Henry, Maria & Ola. The carriage met us at the station. I took Henry to Savile Row & was just starting off again when Connie walked up. I gave her a lift to Hanover Square & went in with her to Mr Noel’s rooms to arrange abt a programme for Pss Frederika’s Concert for her Convalescent Home– Thence we went to Blanche’s & while Connie talked to B. I went on to see Mama & then went back & fetched her & I went home & so did Connie to her home. Temmy (Mrs Austin) came today to stay with us for a week. At 3 o’cl Blanche called for me in the carriage & we went together to St Thomas’ Hospital to see a poor man whom B. had got in there. He had been a conjurer & has a “bad leg.” He was delighted to see her & to tell her what beautiful food he was having there. I had never been there before. It is splendidly arranged in wards with all their different staircases—beautifully clean & airy. We went on to the House of Commons to places given us by Sir Arthur Otway the great interest being to see the passing of the “Explosives Bill” which was brought in by Sir Wm Harcourt and which was passed between 5 & 8 oclock a thing wh was unexampled in our history. After the first speeches Sir Arthur Otway sent to invite us to go to his room to tea. We had hardly sat down there when a little bell rang to summon him to the House to take the chair as they were going into Committee & he is the new chairman of Committees. So Blanche & I had our tea & then returned to the Ladies’ gallery & watched the remaining proceedings till the Bill was passed we then took a cab & went off to 15 Queen Anne St. Henry & Mrs Austin met me there for dinner & then we went home to bed.
