19 April 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 19th April [1883]. Mrs Hanson, Mrs Burr, Miss Drake, all called in the morning. It was a pouring morning & Ella Drake kindly took me to Susan Hambro’s door. From there I walked to Langham House & lunched with Mama & Mr Schreiber. Mama had been to a Committee meeting of the School of Art Work where she met Pss Christian. The Pss told Mama the Queen had said she was determined Henry should have a pension & it was certain. I drove to pay visits & went to the Drummonds & sat a long time with them & then went home to tea. Mr Burton came to see us. We dined with the Murrays in Albemarle St & met Canon Liddon & Mrs Ambrose, M. Goldschmidt but not Jenny Lind. Liddon took me to dinner & Goldschmidt sat by me. When we were going away there was a great search for Liddon’s hat & he finally borrowed one of Mr Murray’s as his was not to be found. The servant said there was only one which was Henry’s. Henry said he had his in his hand—& so it was found that he had two! He then recollected that when we had dined with the Murrays last year we had met Liddon & Henry had lost his new hat & recd an old one instead– It was evident that Liddon had been the thief & had been unconsciously wearing Henry’s hat till this moment & the servant not knowing this had believed that Henry had brought it. Thus the lost property was restored to Henry who had 2 hats! It made a great laugh.
