28 April 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 28th [April 1883]. Sr Felice came to see me. I was rather tired & only just ready when he came. Idita came in her sandalo to take me out shopping. We set off together & went first to San Moisé to a shop there & had just got into the sandalo to go on somewhere else when a workman called Giobbe came to me & said “Sensa Signore ma I principi sona audati address o a casa loro”– At which we hurried back home & sure eno’ there were 2 gondolas & the Crown P. & Pss were upstairs with Princess Victoria, Ct Seckendorff & an ADC & lady in waiting. They staid some time looking at the house & pictures & went away expressing their delight & I went off to Mrs Eden to ask abt a cook. Cortelazzo arrived from Vicenza & after lunch went out with us. It rained & we being in the Stabto gondola went there to get the felze on. We went to see Guggenheim & I gave him a book of designs I had brought him from England. We dined with Crown P. & Pss of Germany at Hotel Danieli at 7.30. We went in morning dress at their desire. They were very kind & we had a pleasant evening. Henry amused them with stories abt animals the lion he had kept as a pet at Bagdad &c &c. We were to have gone out to the piazza afterwards but it rained so at 9.30 we took our departure & went home & had a comfortable game of cribbage.
